Leeds Grand ready for biggest show ever
6th Aug 2012
This week Leeds Grand Theatre prepares for the biggest show it has ever received in its 134 years.
Cameron Mackintosh’s brand new production of The Phantom of the Opera makes its Yorkshire premiere in Leeds opening on Thursday August 9th and running until Saturday September 15th.
“This is the biggest show we’ve had at The Grand,” says Stage Manager, Dave Harris. “We have some 20 wagons coming in, each one packed with scenery and kit; the Technical Team start work on Sunday and will then work 24 hours a day from Monday through to the show opening on Thursday.”
The theatre’s beautiful chandelier will be replaced by a prop representing the one of the Paris Opera House which is central to the story. The replacement of the chandelier is a huge task in itself; it is over 2 metres wide, 1.5 metres deep, has 105 lamps and 6389 crystals so extra care is taken in the removal, packing and storage (image attached).
“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” continues Dave. “It’s a big week for a big show.”
The Phantom of The Opera is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Thursday August 9th to Saturday September 15th.
Tickets are still available priced from £19 to £48.50. Book by calling box office on 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre.com.
