New season Lunchtime Organ Series announced
12th Aug 2010
Leeds International Concert Season is delighted to announce that the 10/11 programme of lunchtime organ concerts has now been published. Taking place in the Town Hall on Mondays at 1.05pm, these free concerts are the perfect way to wind down from a hectic Monday morning in the office.
Fast approaching the fortieth anniversary of its restoration in 1972, the Town Hall organ continues its role at the heart of much of the city’s music-making. The solo organ repertoire underpins the main focus of this series, although the concerts showcase the instrument in a variety of capacities – including the accompaniment of a silent film during Leeds International Film Festival.
The organ is also heard accompanying the Choirs of Leeds Cathedral, Leeds Parish Church, Ripon Cathedral, Wakefield Cathedral and the University of Huddersfield Brass Band. Other highlights of the series include the return of St Peter’s Singers in February, performing Handel’s great oratorio Israel in Egypt, plus performances by guest soloists from further afield, including Jane Parker-Smith (organ), Julia Breakspear (flute) and Kathryn Woodruff (mezzo soprano) and Annaleen Lenaerts (harp).
Alongside the concerts are two chances to learn more about the Town Hall organ, with Simon Lindley’s Meet the Town Hall Organ sessions on Saturday 30 October and Saturday 19 February.
All of these free events are open to all, whether you work in Leeds city centre, are a student or are retired. For a Leeds Lunchtime Organ Music leaflet call 0113 247 8336 or email music@leeds.gov.uk.
